Host Matt Weiss travels into the Tuscan hills to sit down with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini and her daughter Alessandra Angelini, the mother-daughter team behind one of Italy's most respected wine portfolios: Caparzo, Altesino, Borgo Scopeto, and Doga delle Clavule.
Elisabetta's path to wine wasn't inherited. It was built. Before Tuscany, she spent 11 years producing films and large-scale theater productions in Italy. She bought her first winery, Borgo Scopeto, in a whirlwind week after falling in love with it at first sight (yes, it's the same estate where Letters to Juliet was filmed, Amanda Seyfried included). She spent over four years convincing Montalcino's all-male consortium to sell her Caparzo. And when Château Margaux's team, led by legendary director Paul Pontallier, tried to buy neighboring Altesino, Elisabetta outbid them.
Today, Alessandra, trained as an aerospace engineer, runs the estates alongside her mother, leading a new era of precision, sustainability, and data-driven winemaking. Together they're now planting a fifth winery on an old volcano, chasing what might become Tuscany's next great white wine.
This conversation covers four decades of building a wine empire from scratch: the acquisitions, the rivalries, the label that broke every rule in the 1970s, and what it actually takes to run four (soon five) wineries as women in one of Italy's most tradition-bound industries.
